"Smile Pinki" is an Academy Award winning documentary short produced by Smile Train to increase awareness of clefts and what this organization is about. This is a story about a brave little girl who waited six years for a life-changing surgery. When she was born with a severe cleft, everyone in her village thought it was a curse from God. With no education and unable to read or write, Pinki's parents had no idea that her cleft could be fixed. Even if they did, with a household income of less than a dollar a day, they could never afford the surgery their daughter so desperately needed. Not allowed to attend school, tormented by other children who threw rocks and called her "Cut Lip", Pinki faced a long and difficult life filled with pain and heartache. But one day, a social worker told them of a free cleft surgery for the poor. Pinki and her father set off on foot, to find the Smile Train partner hospital in Benares, India, that would give Pinki not just a new smile, but a second chance at life."
SmileTrain is an organization who, in a nutshell, takes financial donations, matched those donations by sending and training local physicians to perform cleft and lip palate surgeries in impoverish areas for children. Literally, it takes $250 to fix. You may know someone with a cleft palette, have had one and got it surgically fixed, or even have a child with this condition. Here in the states, it's a relatively simple procedure to locate and have performed. However, not only is it difficult to impossible in some of the less than fortunate parts of our planet, it places a heavy burden on the afflicted in all aspects of life from social, education, professional, romantic... Everything is affected, even the ability to consume food.
Now, my challenge to you is this. We tattooers of the Hell City shows are all fairly established and work most if not the entire time there. My perspective is that we are fortunate enough to modify bodies for cosmetic luxury, as personal or impersonal as the messages may be, and make a LOT of money doing it. I challenge you to donate 1 hour of that income to this cause. As body modifiers, what's one hour of your income to modify a body that is both physically and socially in need? As a human being, it just feels like the right thing to do. If you feel so inclined, challenge your clients, too.
Again, thanks for taking the time to read this. I will be periodically spamming all of the people working Hell City this year with emails concerning and reminding you of this. If you have any doubts, concerns, and/or suspicions as to whether or not this charity is legit, I encourage you to research them yourself, call them, even ask for a dollar for dollar breakdown. I think its one of the best and impacting charities I've ever encountered, and in the most lasting way possible. These children can be helped for life. THE REST OF THEIR LIVES.
With as many issues that plague the world these days, it's refreshing and exciting to know there are areas we can actually make a positive difference, regardless of our different social, political, and even spiritual (or lack thereof, ha) perspectives. As tattooed humans... Let's help some other humans that need us. If you would like some info, I can send you a packet with a dvd and some literature, just shoot me an address to send it to.
Thanks for your time, and I will see you. Hell City, during the year of the great shift, 2012. I love all of you,
