Chris Dingwell

"KIDS; DON'T DO THIS AT HOME"

Chris Dingwell is a unique figure in the tattoo community. He has a
graduate degree in Fine Arts from Ohio State University, and has
taught college level art courses for several years before diving
headlong into the tattoo world. He began tattooing in 1993 in
Columbus Ohio. He has traveled extensively and worked with many
great figures in the tattoo industry, including Guy Aitchison, Corey
Kruger, Julie Moon, and many more. For a better look at his work,
both as a painter and tattoo artist, you can find him at myspace.com/
dingwell.

In his brand new, never before offered seminar, Chris Dingwell will
talk about his fifteen odd years of tattooing experience, as well as
his paintings and his artistic background, and how it has made him
the artist that he is today. He will talk about the rules of
traditional tattooing and how to break them respectfully. With a
slide show of specific examples, he will also discuss various
technical aspects of tattooing that are unique to his work and how
his tattooing is related to his painting. He will talk about the ins
and outs of abstract tattooing, surrealism, and realistic tattooing;
what separates these styles and what they have in common. He will
also give a detailed discussion of Cover up projects that he has done
over the years and explain why his painterly techniques are
especially effective in this area of tattooing. Participants are
encouraged to contribute their thoughts and questions to this lively
discussion about the ins and outs todays tattoo world. This should be
an entertaining as well as informative event for any artist in the
business, no matter how new or old.

Friday, 12 - 2pm
Cost: $100

NICK BAXTER/DAN HENK SEMINAR
"Fundamentals of Realist Oil Painting"

Dan Henk and Nick Baxter will present a hands-on oil painting seminar at the Paradise Tattoo Gathering on Saturday October 26th. The course will run from 1 to 4 pm and will cost $250. Due to time restraints, some basic knowledge of oil painting is encouraged. Although recommended for at least the intermediary, anyone from a beginner to an expert is welcome to participate.  This is a learn at your own pace seminar that includes everything from a very brief overview on the basics of oil paint, to medium tricks and even artistic rules and hints. The seminar is basically broken into two parts. The first part involves a brief lecture on the medium and project at hand, followed by a question and answer section. All of this is fairly short, and meant to be more of a refresher course than an in depth introduction. At the end of this portion, everyone will have a picture taken with a Polaroid. The Polaroid can be of one's self, or any other easily paintable scene suggested by the attendee. The second portion involves each individual beginning an oil painting of the subject in the photo. Nick Baxter and Dan Henk will encompass the room, giving each individual encouragement and advice as they work to complete their projects.
The goal is to help each attendee progress with the medium. Paintings aren't necessarily expected to be finished in the 2 1/2 hour seminar, but new techniques and approaches, as well as general art advice, will be dispensed by Dan and Nick. The approach is a bit akin to an art class, with a little more hands on feel in regards to personal attention. The relatively short time is taken into account, and hopefully everyone will leave with something new that advances his or her personal ability. A canvas is provided, and basic art materials (10 tubes of oil paint, five paint brushes, alkyd medium, terpenoid and a temporary palette).
Individuals are encouraged to bring their own art supplies as well, if they have them.

GUNNAR SEMINAR
 "Cartooning Everyday Objects & People"

This seminar will cover the materials and techniques used by Gunnar when developing his drawings.  He will discuss every thing from art supplies, gathering reference material and using it to develop drawings to capturing the likeness of everyday objects and people. He will cover drawing thumbnails, creating your own visual library and he will finally help answer the question of “how do I develop my own style?” Last, Gunnar will give you some steps and techniques towards doing it, as well as applying it to tattooing.
Please Bring;
Sketchpads, Pencils, Tracing paper, Micron/Zig Pens
Photos of objects or people you’d like to try cartooning

Sunday 12-3 pm
Cost: $100, includes book

"Tattooists Outside Of Tattooing"

"Why Some Tattoo Artists Like To Work
In Alternate Artistic Media
"

Tattooing has attracted artists of all different backgrounds into
applying their own unique visions on skin.  Many of these artists
also still work regularly on canvas and in other media, bringing back
into these art forms the powerful language and sensibilities that
they learned in tattooing.

In this 1-hour *FREE* seminar, Guy
Aitchison shares his work and that of other contemporary tattooists
to show the parallels between their tattooing and their other art,
and highlights what can be learned by working in multiple artistic
media.  For both artists and art fans.
